Financial DIY is not the only way
by kenteegardin
Whether you choose to trade in stocks and shares or the exchange rates of foreign currencies there is a lot to be said about doing it yourself. In the past we have tended to leave that sort of high finance to the professionals – bond traders, currency brokers, pension fund managers and the like. But thanks to the power of digital technologies, and in keeping with the tenor of the times, people are increasingly doing it for themselves.
Where once the closest most of us would have got to share dealing would have been an insurance policy or a pension scheme, now the trend is for a more hands-on approach. The British government’s decision to allow retirees to cash in their pension pots and take the cash – rather than having to buy an annuity – is the perfect case in point. Self-reliance, self-sufficiency and DIY are increasingly the watchwords for personal finance.
Needless to say, this puts the onus on individual members of the public to take extra care with their hard-earned cash. Not everyone is equally informed when it comes to the small print of financial products and their variable levels of risk and their tax implications. It is still a highly complex area.

Day trading
At the sharp end of doing it for yourself, Financial Spread Betting (FSB) – as offered by such specialists as the Tradefair organization – relies purely and simply on your assessment of a particular market at a particular point in time. It is immediately accessible, fees are minimal, and it is usually free of any tax implications. If that all sounds too good to be true, it has to be pointed out that FSB is also a highly volatile investment environment and there is no guarantee that you will not lose your money. Even so, the level of market insight and support the leading providers offer is extremely impressive. The highly polished website at Tradefair manages to make the whole process incredibly accessible and easy to get to grips with.
Thinking longer term
A safer strategy is perhaps to invest on a long-term basis. FSB is a very quick day trading mechanism which is often viewed as a recreational form of trading. There is a potential for fast profits, but there is also a significant level of risk. Putting money into stocks over a longer term is undeniably less exciting, but the trade-off is that the longer timeframe allows for a more considered reaction to events.
Outright share ownership may be more complicated in terms of the tax implications and dealing fees, but the other side of the coin is that as well as offering growth potential shares do tend to pay an annual return in the form of a dividend. The advice of a good broker may often also be of value in terms of identifying potential market movers.

Security first
An even more cautious approach would involve bucking the individualistic trend altogether, and investing in a long-term investment bond of some sort whereby your money is pooled with that of other investors in a portfolio of different stocks and shares. The benefit here is that your fortunes are not reliant on a single company or even a single national economy. Again there are fees involved, and there is no one-size-fits-all tax treatment, but on the plus side there is considerable security.
The growing onus on individuals to make their own financial investment decisions shows no sign of abating. On that basis it makes sense to at least be aware of what there is out there and what risks and potential returns each of them can bring. If you want a white knuckle ride on a daily basis, FSB might have something to offer you. If you want your financial life to be more sedate, predictable and old fashioned, other options may be more suitable. There are different ways to do DIY, and the more of them you are aware of, the better off you are likely to be.

These 5 Public Figures Have More Compelling Life Stories Than You
Politicians, celebrities and business leaders appear to live charmed lives. And, of course, it’s true that many of society’s most visible people were truly born with silver spoons in their mouths (not literally). Not every public figure has a boring riches-to-riches story, though. Some make for downright compelling reading.
- Keanu Reeves, Actor
Whoa. Who knew Keanu Reeves had such a compelling life story?
Reeves, a native Hawaiian, didn’t grow up in abject poverty. But he also wasn’t super comfortable as a child. And unlike most celebrities who overcame early adversity, Reeves’ live actually got worse as he got older. In the early 2000s, Reeves and his then-girlfriend lost their newborn child; after their relationship ended, the girlfriend succumbed to addiction and died in a horrific car accident. Then Reeves’ sister was diagnosed with cancer. Oh, and he hasn’t heard from his dad in years. Say what you will about his acting, but Reeves has a very compelling story.
- Marco Rubio, 2016 Presidential Candidate
Florida Senator Marco Rubio has a real shot at the Republican nomination for President in 2016 — and if the party had any sense, they might just give it to him. That’s because he has an intensely compelling life story: His parents emigrated from Cuba in the late 1950s, landing in Miami, where his dad struggled to make ends meet as a bartender. Thanks to some much-needed scholarship assistance and relentless encouragement from his parents, Marco excelled in school and graduated near the top of his class. Of course, the final chapter of his story remains to be written.
- Ed Jany, 2014 Candidate for FL-13
Ed Jany, another Florida-based public advocate, may have an even more compelling story. The son of Brazilian immigrants who landed in Milwaukee after an arduous journey from Sao Paulo, he’s lived the American dream: serving more than three decades in military and law enforcement, building a successful career as a private security expert, and now embarking on a new journey as a passionate public advocate for his fellow Floridians.
- Leonardo DiCaprio, Actor
Leo is at or near the top of the list of handsome, debonair male movie stars over age 35. (Only George Clooney and Brad Pitt seem to give him a run for his money, and Leo is definitely the baby of the bunch.) Plus, he’s reportedly worth more than $200 million. But Leo wasn’t always rich and famous. Born to a young mother in a rough part of Hollywood, he drifted in and out of homeless shelters for the first decade of his life and often went hungry at the end of the day. Now that he has the means to give back, it’s clear that he hasn’t forgotten his humble roots — he’s one of Hollywood’s greatest humanitarians.
- Oprah Winfrey, Entrepreneur
You probably saw this one coming. Winfrey grew up in rural Mississippi, one of the poorest places in America. Her mother, who raised her largely on her own, struggled mightily to make ends meet, going so far as to clothe Winfrey in potato sacks during one particularly harsh stretch. But these obstacles were no match for the precocious Oprah: She won a scholarship to Tennessee State University as a teen and became Nashville’s first African-American news correspondent at the ripe young age of 19. Soon enough, she moved to Chicago, started her own TV program, and — well, the rest is history.
How the Cotton Gin is Like the Printing Press
Humans have been cultivating cotton for thousands of years. In fact, cotton was among the first domesticated crops, and it played a key role in driving the developments of early civilizations in the Middle East and northern Africa.

Common Reading Problems and How to Identify Them
Although there are endless books about parenting and what to expect when you have kids, your little tykes do not come with a manual, and they are all different. They have their own personalities and they grow and develop at their own rates. This can leave even the best prepared parents stumped at times. And while you want to assume that your children will eventually overcome any troubles they initially have where reading is concerned, the truth is that they may end up needing extra help because they are dealing with identifiable problems. The earlier you diagnose these issues and begin to address them, the better chance your kids will have of staying at grade level and developing a love of reading, and of learning. Here are just a few common reading problems your kids might face and how you can identify them.
How to Find an Affordable Health Insurance Plan
The truth of the matter is that insurance can be expensive. If you have a medical history, your insurance may be even more expensive. Sure, they may offer more bells and whistles – and perhaps some freebies – but if you can’t afford the policy, you want to keep looking. Here is how to find an affordable health insurance plan.
