Skills to Foster Pre-Approval
Before a child is placed with you as a Foster Carer, it is expected to complete the Skills to Foster pre-approval training program, which is delivered over a few weeks and consists of several sessions of training. The main topics of the program are child development, attachment, safer caring and working with birth families.
Mandatory Post-Approval Courses
After approval, a number of mandatory training sessions need to be completed as a Foster Carer. These are: first aid, safeguarding, and safer caring sessions which need to be completed within a certain time frame after placement of a child/children begins.
Training and Your Annual Review
How training for foster carers is delivered and how completion of training is monitored will also be covered. Your progress through training will also be discussed in relation to your Annual Foster Carer Review.
How Training Is Delivered

Expenses and Allowances
However many fostering agencies and local authorities will reimburse any reasonable expenses incurred during training as well as paying an attendance allowance for each session attended. It is worth checking with your supervising social worker what is offered before.
