Journalists call on Apple to remove AI feature

0 0

A well-respected journalism group has called on Apple to withdraw one of its new AI features after it generated several incorrect news headline summaries within weeks of being launched. Let’s look at this in more detail.

One of the features of the AI app is grouping multiple notifications together and summarising their content; however, the non-profit organisation, known as Reporters Without Borders, has highlighted several instances whereby inaccurate summaries have been generated for news apps including the BBC and the New York Times.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is a suite of features including Intelligent writing tools, unique images, a more integrated and personal Siri, and the use of priority notifications that can be automatically summarised.

Apple began releasing these features in the UK in early December 2024.

Examples of incorrect summaries

In December, a grouped notification on the app displayed a summary of recent BBC news headlines. The first part stated that the suspect in the Brian Thompson murder, Luigi Mangione, had shot himself. This was false.

Also in December, a grouped notification displayed a summary of BBC headlines in which it stated that Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship. This was before the final had taken place and was based on an article about how he had won the semi-final.

In November, a similar issue occurred when three headlines from the New York Times were grouped together. The first one of the three indicated that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested; however, what had really happened was that the ICC had issued a warrant for his arrest.

Journalism courses

If you are interested in a career in journalism, there are a number of providers, such as https://schoolofjournalism.co.uk/, that offer a range of journalism degree courses that can help you to get started.

No response as yet from Apple

RSF said that it is clear this AI feature is unable to produce reliable information and asked for it to be removed. Despite being approached, Apple has yet to comment on the incidents.
