5 Helpful Eating Tips for New Denture Wearers

0 0

Even though it may seem like only seniors needed dentures, the reality is that while some level of tooth loss does tend to be somewhat prevalent among older people, dentures do not discriminate between ages. If you happen to lose your teeth whether it’s due to gum disease or even an accident or injury, there is a chance that getting dentures may be recommended to you. If that does happen, wearing dentures will definitely take some getting used to, especially when it comes to eating. If this is something that may be of concern to you, here are five tips on how to eat with a new set of dentures in your mouth:

Know the right foods to eat. Before we get into how you should eat when you have dentures, the first thing that you should know are the kinds of foods that are appropriate and inappropriate for denture wearers. Because you’ll no longer be able to eat foots the way you once did, soft fruits and steamed vegetables, olives, whole grain bread, smoothies and sugarless chewing gum are all things that you can eat that will be good for your dentures (and they’ll benefit your health too).

Know the wrong foods to eat. As far as foods that aren’t the best for you to try to chew while wearing dentures, ones to keep an eye out for are nuts, foods with small seeds, raw veggies, sticky and chewy candies, popcorn as well as coffee and wine. Basically, anything that can stick to your dentures, lodge into your gums or stain your dentures are foods that you should try and avoid whenever possible.

Cut food into small bites. If you’re someone who loves a good steak, you might think that with dentures in your mouth, you’re not going to be able to enjoy them anymore. That’s not the case as long as you properly prepare the meat for consumption. If you attempt to eat big pieces at once, that could prove to be frustrating because it could cause you to destabilize your teeth. However, if you cut the steak into very small bites, that makes it easier to manage and reduces the chances of you dislodging your dentures.

Eat slowly. Speaking of loose dentures , if you went to a dental office for another tip on how to eat in such a way that you could avoid that from being an issue, something that they would probably tell you to do is to make sure that you eat your food slowly. That way, you’re not putting too much pressure on your dentures. Also, something else you’ll want to do is try as much as possible to distribute your food evenly over both sides of your mouth which will keep you dentures stable as you eat.

Drink lots of fluids. When you first get your dentures, it’s actually best to start off with a liquid diet just until you can adjust to having them inside of your mouth. But as you start to ease into a solid food diet, it’s important that you also drink plenty of fluids with your meal in order to keep food from lodging along your gum line. Just make sure that you don’t hold the fluids into your mouth for too long because if you do, you could run the risk of loosening the bottom portion of you dentures.
