Considered to be the band REM‘s finest record ever, Everybody Hurts is a song dedicated to people who are feeling that life is just too much at the moment. It’s a song that directly appeals to people who may be thinking I need someone to talk to. If you are feeling that it would be a good idea to follow the link and see what help and support is available for you.
The song was mainly written by the drummer Bill Berry but as with all of REM songs everybody contributed to some part of it. Berry’s intention was to create something that would speak to the youth and to teenagers who were struggling to find their place in the world or to deal with the many trials and tribulations that are laid in front of them as they grow up.
Naturally the song has been used in many campaigns to try and promote mental health and for people to stand up and speak out if they are having problems in their lives. This was fully the intention of the band and they are extremely happy to see it used in this way.
Commercially the song was more of a hit outside of their native United States of America but over time the resonance that the song provides to people and the support it gives has been fully recognized throughout the world and it is an understandable symbol of a campaign for better mental health for all.
